Yeomanry's anniversary too

  

By coincidence, 2025 is a significant year not just for the loggerheads but for the Shropshire Yeomanry regiment. It is the 150th anniversary year of the North and South Shropshire Yeomanry. 
The anniversary is being celebrated with a small exhibition at St Mary’s, Shrewsbury town’s central church.

The Yeomanry badge has always carried loggerheads (as you’d expect), though the design can vary quite a bit. In the photo above, there are three versions of Yeomanry loggerheads!

The Shropshire Yeomanry were transmuted into the 75th and 76th (SY) Regiments Royal Artillery during WW2.

Smoking for loggerheads

 

In the old days when nearly everybody smoked, cigarette companies gave away a free card in each pack as a sort of extra incentive to get people to buy.  Depending on the promotion at the time, these might be cards of famous footballers or international flags or Kings & Queens and so on; and there were usually about twenty to be collected. 

This is a photo of such a card.  Perhaps Wills had put together a collection of 'shields of arms of local authorities' (?). It doesn't sound the most exciting promotion though....

Heralding Ludlow

 
The newly refurbished Ludlow Museum features a display case with the costumes from the town pageant in 1934.

This one – simply labelled a ‘Herald’s outfit, in blue’ – carries the three loggerheads. There was no reason for a costume in a Ludlow pageant to carry the Shrewsbury symbol, so my guess is that the person who made it (they were all hand-made) was a Shrewsbury loyalist!
The maker also got the colours right – the main costume was in blue and the trims in yellow/gold.

These leopards are 'langued' in quite an extreme way - their tongues are very long indeed.
